Understanding How To Remove Acrylic Nails
Acrylic enhancements are the strongest, most rigid artificial structures utilized in the beauty industry. The mixture of liquid monomer and powder polymer chemically cures into an incredibly dense, rock-hard plastic shield that violently bonds to the keratin fibers of your natural nail bed.
Because the bond is so aggressive, removing acrylic nails is a highly dangerous structural procedure. If you lose your patience and attempt to use sheer mechanical force—such as wedging a Metro card or dental floss under the edge of the acrylic to forcefully "pop" it off—you will cause catastrophic damage. Ripping acrylic off physically tears the top 3 to 4 layers of your biological nail plate straight off your finger.
This trauma leaves the natural nail paper-thin, incredibly sensitive, red, and structurally incapable of holding another set of nails for at least six months. The only safe way to remove acrylic is to break the chemical bond using specialized solvents.
Our Professional Advice
While Galeo Beauty strongly advises booking a Professional Acrylic Soak-Off so a master technician can safely monitor the nail plate, you can remove them at home if you strictly adhere to the chemical melting protocol.
1. Destroying the Top Coat Seal
Acrylic enhancements are usually sealed with a UV Gel Top Coat. Pure acetone physically cannot penetrate this plastic top coat.
- The Protocol: You must take a coarse, 100-grit nail file and aggressively file the entire shiny top layer off every single nail. You must physically rough up the acrylic until it appears entirely dull, matte, and scratched. This exposes the raw acrylic underneath so the solvent can actually enter the structure.
2. The 100% Pure Acetone Bath
Regular drugstore nail polish remover (which is mostly water and fragrance) will absolutely not work. You need heavy clinical solvents.
- The Protocol: You must purchase 100% Pure Acetone. Pour the acetone into a small glass bowl. Coat the raw skin tightly surrounding your cuticles in thick petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) to protect your skin from intense chemical dehydration. Do not use a plastic bowl; pure acetone will instantly melt the plastic.
3. The Soaking Phase (Patience is Mandatory)
You cannot rush the chemical melting process.
- Submerge your filed acrylic nails completely into the pure acetone bath. You must leave them submerged for an absolute minimum of 20 to 30 minutes.
- Throughout the soaking process, the rock-hard acrylic will slowly begin to turn into a soft, gooey, gummy paste.
4. Gentle Scraping
Do not use metal tools to scrape your nails. You will gouge your natural nail bed.
- After 30 minutes, remove your hands and gently push the gooey, melted acrylic off using an orange-wood stick or a specialized plastic cuticle pusher. If there are still hard, stubborn patches of acrylic attached, do not scrape aggressively! You must re-submerge your nails into the acetone for another 10 minutes until the remaining acrylic completely melts away.
Finish by heavily washing your hands and flooding your severely dehydrated cuticles with pure Jojoba oil to restore the stripped lipids.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best first step for how to remove acrylic nails?
That depends on the main pattern you are dealing with, how stubborn it is, and whether you need prevention, correction, or maintenance. The best next step is usually the one that matches the root issue rather than the trendiest option.
Can home care alone be enough?
Home care can absolutely help, especially when the concern is mild or you are catching it early. It usually stops being enough when the issue is stubborn, advanced, or keeps undoing itself between your efforts.
What usually makes results better or faster?
Consistency matters more than intensity. Choosing the right few steps and sticking to them usually outperforms constantly switching products or treatments.
When should I move from research to treatment?
Professional help makes the most sense when the concern keeps coming back, feels too advanced for home care, or when you want faster and more reliable progress than products alone are giving you.
