How To Treat Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin reacts easily with redness, stinging or itching. This guide covers common triggers, a simple routine that protects the skin barrier, and the gentle facials that suit reactive skin.

How To Treat Sensitive Skin: what to consider
What makes skin sensitive
Sensitive skin reacts quickly: it flushes, stings when products go on, or feels tight and itchy. Usually the skin barrier, the outer layer that keeps water in and irritants out, is weakened. Some people are born with more reactive skin. For others it becomes "sensitised" by too many strong products, over-exfoliating, sun, or harsh cleansers.
Common triggers
- Fragrance and essential oils in skin care.
- Foaming cleansers and very hot water.
- Using several actives at once, such as retinol, acids and vitamin C.
- Sun, wind and sudden temperature changes.
A routine that calms the skin
- Cut back to the basics for a few weeks: a gentle cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturiser and a mineral sunscreen.
- Introduce one new product at a time and wait about two weeks before adding another.
- Patch test new products on a small area first.
- Skip scrubs. If you exfoliate, choose a mild product and use it rarely.
Facials that suit reactive skin
Strong peels and aggressive exfoliation are not a good starting point for sensitive skin. At Galeo Beauty, Dermalogica Pro Calm is designed for sensitive, reactive or redness-prone skin, and the QMS Sensitive Skin Facial is another gentle option. If you are unsure, a Pro Skin 30 gives a shorter, customised treatment while your therapist assesses your skin.
Tell your therapist about past reactions and any products you use. If redness is constant, or you have bumps, burning or flaking that will not settle, see a doctor, because rosacea and eczema need a medical diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have a facial if my skin is sensitive?
Yes, if the treatment is chosen for sensitive skin. Dermalogica Pro Calm and the QMS Sensitive Skin Facial are both designed for reactive skin. Tell your therapist about any reactions you have had before.
What is a skin barrier?
It is the outer layer of the skin that keeps water in and irritants out. When it is damaged, skin loses moisture and reacts more easily, which is what many people describe as sensitive skin.
Should I see a doctor?
If redness is constant, you have bumps or burning, or your skin does not settle with a gentle routine, see a doctor. Conditions such as rosacea or eczema need a medical diagnosis.
